Information about RAHOBI School Scholarships

Our scholarship program has been set up to give the students from the mission the opportunity to continue their education.  The public school adjacent to the mission provides a limited education from K through 6.  We supplement the education for most of the public-school students with lunch and another 2 to 3 hours a day of instruction/crafts/recreation.  We found that the Tarahumara children did not continue their education, so we located the RAHOBI boarding school about 20 miles away operated by the Mexican Baptist church.  This school offers a good curriculum from grades 7 through 12.  Detailed information about the school is provided below.

The scholarship program was started in 2015 with one student that wanted to go and that Manolo and Rayito believed was qualified.  We had one supporter that agreed to support the student at $50 per month.  We provide all the student supplies, clothing and other necessities.  The program has been gradually growing as the students see what is possible for them.  We have had as many as 8 students in this scholarship program.

We have a scholarship application and evaluation procedure to select the students.  It is required that the parents agree with the student’s desire to attend RAHOBI.  Our mission directors evaluate the applications and select the students that are offered the scholarships.  The scholarships provide tuition, room and board, clothing, and personal items for the student.  Our mission directors visit the students at least monthly to listen and encourage them.

It is our goal to sponsor the students for 6 years so that they can have a much better opportunity to join the Mexican economy or to continue to university.  The limitation to this program is identifying qualified and motivated candidates.  As you can imagine, this is a difficult concept to grasp for these students in a culture where families are typically started at the age of 15 or 16.  We are trying to get some boys to join the scholarship program, but it is more difficult to convince them to do it.
